RAM Mounts South AfricaSouth Africa

Privacy and Cookies Notice

RAM Mounts South Africa supplies rugged mounting systems for phones, tablets, cameras, radios and other mobile devices. This notice explains what personal information we collect through this website, why we collect it, who else sees it, how long we keep it, and what you can tell us to do with it.

It is written to meet the notification duty in section 18 of the Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 ("POPIA"), and it replaces the privacy and cookies section that was previously published at the foot of our website terms and conditions. Where the two differ, this notice is the one that applies.

The words "personal information", "responsible party", "operator" and "data subject" are used here with the meanings POPIA gives them. "You" means the person visiting this website or sending us an enquiry.

Last updated: 7 September 2026.

A note while this site is being prepared

Some of our company registration details are still being confirmed and are shown below as blanks. They will be completed before this website is published at its own domain. Nothing on this page is a placeholder for how we treat your information: only the registration details are outstanding. If you need any of them in the meantime, email us at info@maxtech.co.za and we will send them to you.

We are the South African distributor for RAM® Mounts. We are a separate business from National Products, Inc. in the United States, which manufactures the products, and this notice covers only the information we hold. It does not cover anything you send to rammount.com or to any other RAM Mounts distributor.

Our Information Officer

POPIA requires every private body to have an Information Officer, who is the head of the business unless someone else is designated, and who must be registered with the Information Regulator.

Send any question about this notice, any request about your own information, and any complaint to that address. It reaches the Information Officer.

What personal information do we collect?

Three kinds, and no more than these.

1. What you type into a form

Our enquiry, quote and contact forms ask for:

  • your first name and last name;
  • your email address;
  • your telephone number;
  • your company name;
  • the industry you work in, the kind of buyer you are (end user, reseller, integrator) and the device brands you use, where the form asks;
  • whatever you choose to write in the message, and the list of products you added to your enquiry basket before sending it;
  • whether you ticked the optional box asking to receive product news by email.

2. What your browser tells our server

When you use the site we record:

  • your IP address and the browser identification string your browser sends;
  • the pages you open, when, and the type of device you are on;
  • a random visitor number we store in a cookie on your device, so that repeat visits from the same browser can be counted once rather than many times, and a session number stored in your browser's local storage;
  • where you came from, if you arrived through a link that says so: the referring website, any campaign values in the address (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content) and any advertising click identifier the address carries, such as gclid, fbclid or msclkid;
  • the words you type into the site search, and how many results they returned;
  • the contents of your enquiry basket, held against a basket number in a cookie so the basket survives until you send it or clear it. The basket is not linked to your name unless and until you send it to us on a form;
  • your cookie choice, together with the date, the version of this notice you were shown, your IP address and your browser identification string, so that we can show what you agreed to and when.

The visitor number and the session number are random. They are not derived from your name, your email address or anything else about you, and on their own they identify a browser rather than a person. Once you send us a form they are stored alongside what you typed, and from that point they are part of your personal information.

3. What we do not collect

This website takes enquiries and quote requests. It has no shopping checkout and no payment gateway, so we never ask for and never receive:

  • credit or debit card numbers, or any other payment details;
  • bank account details;
  • your identity number, date of birth or any government-issued number;
  • any of the special personal information listed in section 26 of POPIA, such as health, race, religion, political persuasion, trade union membership or biometric information;
  • your precise location. We know only what your IP address suggests, which is approximate.

You do not need an account to use this website, so there are no customer passwords. If an order is later placed with us by email, telephone or in person, that is a separate transaction outside this website and our ordinary business records apply to it.

Why do we use it, and on what legal basis?

POPIA requires processing to have a lawful justification. Ours are these, and each is tied to a purpose rather than kept open-ended.

  • To read your enquiry, work out a price and availability, and reply to you. Section 11(1)(b): the processing is necessary to take steps you asked for before we conclude a contract with you.
  • To send the enquiry to the right person on our sales team, and to keep a record of what we quoted and what happened next. Section 11(1)(f): our legitimate interest in running a sales business and being able to answer you again about the same enquiry.
  • To keep records of the transactions that follow an enquiry. Section 11(1)(c): compliance with the record-keeping obligations that tax and company law place on us.
  • To count visits, see which pages and searches are used, and see which campaign or referral brought you here. Section 11(1)(f): our legitimate interest in knowing whether the website works and whether our advertising is worth what it costs. You can object to this at any time, and you can switch it off yourself in the cookie settings.
  • To send you product news and offers by email. Section 69 read with section 11(1)(a): your consent, given by ticking the box. Nothing else on the site subscribes you.
  • To keep the site up, block abuse of the forms, and investigate a security incident. Section 11(1)(f): our legitimate interest in protecting the site and the people who use it.

We do not use your information to build a profile of you, to make an automated decision about you, or to score you. We do not sell, rent or trade personal information to anyone, for any purpose.

Do you have to give us your information?

No. Giving us your personal information is voluntary, and section 18 of POPIA requires us to tell you what happens if you do not.

  • Browsing, searching and building a mount: you can do all of it without telling us who you are. We never ask you to identify yourself to look at a product or a price.
  • Sending an enquiry: your name, your email address and your message are required, because without them we have nothing to answer and nowhere to send the answer. If you would rather not fill in a form, telephone us on +27 10 592 1707 instead.
  • Everything else on the form (company, telephone number, industry, buyer type, device brands) is optional. Leaving it out means our first reply is likely to ask you for it, because a mount recommendation depends on the device and the vehicle, but your enquiry will still be answered.
  • The marketing tick box is optional and separate. Leaving it unticked has no effect on your enquiry, your price or the service you get.
  • The information your browser sends is not something you hand over deliberately. You can decline the non-essential part of it in the cookie settings, described below, and the site works exactly the same afterwards.

Who else sees it?

Your information is seen by the people at RAM Mounts South Africa who need it to answer you, and by the suppliers listed below, who process it on our behalf under section 20 of POPIA and may use it for nothing except the job we give them.

  • IT Design (itdesign.co.za), our website developer and hosting provider. They run the server and the database this website and its enquiry records live on. The server is in South Africa.
  • Our outbound mail relay (antispam.co.za). Every email this site sends, including the copy of your enquiry that reaches our sales team, is handed to an authenticated relay for delivery. It is a South African service.
  • Google. When you use the site search, the words you typed are sent to Google's embedding service so that the search understands what you mean rather than only matching letters. This is described under cross-border transfers below.
  • Our professional advisers (auditors, attorneys) where they need to see a record in order to advise us, and always under a duty of confidence.
  • A law enforcement agency, a regulator or a court, where the law requires us to hand something over or where we need to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim.

Two things are worth saying plainly because they are not true of most retail websites.

  • There is no advertising or analytics tracking on this site. No Google Analytics, no Google Ads tag, no Meta or Facebook pixel, no TikTok pixel, no advertising network of any kind is installed. If we ever add one, this notice will be updated first and you will be asked before it is switched on.
  • Our stock and pricing supplier does not receive anything about you. Live prices and stock come from our inventory system, Unleashed. The website only reads from it. It never sends it your name, your enquiry or anything else about you.

Our product photographs are served through this website itself rather than fetched by your browser from somewhere else, so opening a product page does not tell any other company that you did.

A small number of pages embed something made by another company: a video from YouTube, or a catalogue viewer from Issuu, or an image still hosted on the international RAM Mounts site. When you open one of those pages your browser fetches that item directly from that company, which means it learns your IP address and may set its own cookies, exactly as it would if you had opened it on their site. We receive nothing from those embeds and we have no control over what those companies do with the request. Their own privacy policies apply.

Does your information leave South Africa?

One thing does, and section 72 of POPIA requires us to tell you what and why.

Site search. When you type something into the search box, the words you typed are sent to Google's embedding service, which runs outside South Africa, and it returns a mathematical representation of them that our search uses to find matching products. What is sent is the search text and nothing else: not your name, not your email address, not your IP address as an identifier of you, not your visitor number, and not your cookie. We rely on section 72(1)(a), on the basis that the recipient is bound by contractual data-protection terms that uphold principles for the lawful processing of personal information substantially similar to POPIA's. If you would prefer that nothing you type reaches another country, browse the product categories or the mount builder instead of using the search box: they run entirely on our own server.

Everything else stays here. The website, the database holding your enquiry, the search index, the image library and the mail relay all run on South African infrastructure. We do not host your information overseas, we do not back it up overseas, and we do not send it to the United States or to any other RAM Mounts distributor.

The one exception is the embedded videos, catalogue viewers and images described in the previous section. Those are fetched by your browser from the company that hosts them, wherever that is. We do not send them anything.

Cookies and similar technology

A cookie is a small file this website asks your browser to keep. We use four, and only one of them is not essential.

  • rm_cookie_consent_v1 (essential, 12 months). Remembers the cookie choice you made, so we do not ask again on every page.
  • rm_cart (essential, 30 days). Identifies your enquiry basket, so the products you added are still there when you come back.
  • site_locale (essential, until you close the browser). Remembers which country site you are on.
  • rm_vid_za (analytics, 12 months). A random visitor number, so that a returning browser is counted once rather than many times.

Your browser's local storage also holds a session number (rm_session_id), which expires 30 days after your last visit, and a copy of your cookie choice. Local storage is not a cookie but it does the same job, so we count it the same way.

How the choice works. The banner appears on your first visit. Until you choose, essential cookies and the analytics visitor number are active, and no marketing or advertising cookie is set, because this site does not have any. Choosing "Reject non-essential" stops the visitor number and the page-view records immediately. You can change your mind at any time using the Cookie settings link at the foot of every page, and you can delete our cookies through your browser whenever you like. Turning off the non-essential cookies does not break anything: the enquiry basket, the search and the mount builder all keep working.

We do not use cookies to advertise to you, to follow you onto other websites, or to let anyone else follow you.

How long do we keep it?

Section 14 of POPIA does not let us keep personal information for longer than we need it. Our periods are:

  • Enquiries, quote requests and the emails sent about them: for as long as we are dealing with you and for five years after our last contact about that enquiry, which is the period the Consumer Protection Act and our tax obligations expect a supplier to be able to account for a transaction.
  • Records of a completed sale: five years from the end of the financial year in which the transaction happened, as tax and company law require.
  • Website usage records (page views, sessions, referral and campaign sources): 24 months, after which they are deleted or reduced to a count that is no longer about any individual.
  • Cookie consent records: for as long as the choice they record is valid, and for 12 months afterwards, so that we can show what you were asked and what you answered.
  • Marketing consent: until you withdraw it, and for 12 months after you withdraw it, so that we can prove we stopped.

We keep something for longer only where a law requires it, or where it is needed for a claim, an investigation or a dispute that is still live. When a period ends the record is deleted, or is stripped of everything that could identify you.

How do we protect it?

Section 19 of POPIA requires reasonable technical and organisational measures. Ours are:

  • every page and every form on this website is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), so what you type cannot be read in transit;
  • the database holding enquiries runs on a South African server, and reaching it needs a credential that only the application and our developer hold;
  • the administration system is reachable only with an individual named account, and a password stored as a one-way hash rather than in readable form;
  • staff see enquiry records only where their job requires it;
  • outbound email is sent through an authenticated relay rather than an open one;
  • the suppliers listed earlier may use your information only for the job we give them, and for nothing else.

No system is beyond reach, and we do not claim ours is. If personal information of yours is accessed or acquired by someone who had no right to it, section 22 of POPIA requires us to notify the Information Regulator and to notify you as soon as reasonably possible after we establish it, and we will.

Your rights, and how to use them

POPIA gives you the following rights over the information we hold about you. All of them are free to exercise, and using one will never cost you service, price or priority.

  • To be told what we hold and to get a copy (section 23). We will confirm free of charge whether we hold personal information about you. A copy of the record itself is dealt with under the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2 of 2000, and a prescribed fee may apply to the copy.
  • To have it corrected, or deleted where it is wrong (section 24). If anything we hold about you is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, misleading or was obtained unlawfully, tell us and we will correct or delete it. The Information Regulator publishes Form 2 for this, and you may use it, but a plain email is enough for us.
  • To object to what we are doing with it (section 11(3)). Where we rely on our legitimate interests, which is the analytics described above and our record-keeping about your enquiry, you may object on reasonable grounds and we will stop unless the law requires us to carry on. Form 1 is published for this purpose.
  • To withdraw your consent (section 11(2)(b)) at any time, where consent is what we relied on. Withdrawing it does not make what we did before unlawful.
  • To tell us to stop sending you marketing (section 69), at any time and without giving a reason.
  • Not to be subjected to a decision made only by a machine (section 71). We do not make any such decision about you.
  • To complain, to us and to the Information Regulator.

How to make a request. Email info@maxtech.co.za or telephone +27 10 592 1707, and say what you want. We may ask you to prove who you are, so that we do not hand your information to somebody else. We will acknowledge your request as soon as we receive it and answer it within 30 days, and if we need longer we will tell you why before that period runs out. The Information Regulator's prescribed forms are at inforegulator.org.za/popia-forms.

Direct marketing

Section 69 of POPIA is strict about unsolicited electronic marketing, and we keep to it.

  • We send marketing email only to people who asked for it by ticking the box on one of our forms, or who are already our customers and are being told about products similar to what they bought from us, which is what section 69(3) allows.
  • Every marketing message says who it is from and gives you a way to stop it.
  • You can stop it at any time by replying to any message from us, or by emailing info@maxtech.co.za with the word "unsubscribe". We will act on it without argument and without asking why.
  • We never buy marketing lists, and we never give your address to anyone else to market to you.
  • Answering an enquiry is not marketing. If you send us an enquiry and do not tick the box, you will hear from us about that enquiry and about nothing else.

Children

POPIA treats anyone under 18 as a child and does not allow us to process a child's personal information without the consent of a competent person or an authorisation from the Information Regulator. This is a business-to-business and consumer website for buying mounting hardware, it is not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect anything from one. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email info@maxtech.co.za and we will delete it.

Complaining to the Information Regulator

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information or your request, please tell us first at info@maxtech.co.za so that we have a chance to put it right. You do not have to, and you may complain directly to the Information Regulator at any time. Their published details are:

A POPIA complaint is lodged on Form 5, which the Regulator publishes at inforegulator.org.za/popia-forms, or through their eServices portal.

Who you are dealing with

Changes to this notice

We will update this notice when what we do with personal information changes, and the date at the top tells you when it last changed. If a change is significant, for example if we start using an analytics or advertising service, we will say so on the website before the change takes effect and, where POPIA requires your consent, we will ask for it rather than assume it.
